J10

I really enjoyed this class as a whole! i came into the quarter with a very hazy view of what exactly are designers and have now left with a better understanding of what they do and how they do it, not a super clear understanding but a much better one then when i started.

i liked the fact that a lot of the work was in groups. some people dont enjoy groups and sometimes they can impair your work, but i have found that working with other people is very important in the design world. its good to have groups because it gives you people to bounce ideas off of and improve and fine tune ideas.

i read gabes finally thoughts for the course and saw that he purposely gave us lots of work all due at one time and i think thats smart, but a lot of that work turned out to be dumb busy work that got put on the back burner while doing the bigger tasks of the course and other courses work during the quarter and they ended up not getting done. this is of course all my fault as result of my lack of time management skills, but piling on busy work did not help.

besides that i really enjoyed this class, i looked forward to it a ton more then any other class

My group for the Colman project were my fellow Jacks : paytonAudra, and Kylie.

Our product for this presentation was the U-Stem-sil, the multi use kitchen utensil

THIS  is our presentation that we used that Kylie put together on Prezi.

Our group worked very well together, we listened to each others idea, challenged each others ideas in a non-confrontational way, bounced ideas off of each other, and we used each others strengths to our advantage throughout the whole process.

At first our group was really centered on things that could work for the home and the outdoors. Some of the big aspects about Coleman that we wanted to incorporate in our project were things like being compact, having multiple uses, and being durable. A product that gave us our initial inspiration was the Swiss Army knife and its ability to have so many useful things packed into a small durable space. after coming up with many different options for products we finally landed on the U-Stem-sil.

My primary role in the group was to do the modeling that we used in the presentation. the program i used was google sketchup, which is a terrible modeling program but its free sooooo ya. Audra did work with who our User and Colman is, Kylie collaborated with Audra on that as well as putting together and organizing the final presentation, and payton did work on the logo and product. Basically we all figured out as a group what we wanted for each different section (product, logo, packaging, kiosk) and then each person got what they were going to do and fine tuned it to make it project ready.

here are pictures of what i worked on on Google Sketchup

I really enjoyed all of the presentations, i thought that everyone did a great job portraying what they wanted out of their project and what it should actually do. people seemed to miss out on why coleman would like their product/packaging/kiosk which is pretty big part of the presentation. i liked the fact that we had some sort of opinion in the grading, somethings that were said in a presentation probably made sense to some and just didnt make any sense at all to others and that will be reflected in the class grade portion. seeing all of the presentations gave me an understanding of what works and what doesnt in situations that will arise that are similar to these. all in all, no complaints about that last 2 days of class!

These past couple have classes have really gotten me pumped about design as my major! the presentations that we had from the Design Circle people and the Cobergo (i couldnt remember their company name) people. between talking about what i should expect to talking about the entrance exam, they both really got me looking forward to the future and also calming my lurking fear of the entrance exam and process. i also really enjoyed the video about girl talk! i didnt think a documentary could be so interesting, they are usually so dry and boring but this one made talking about copyright stuff really interesting. i also never thought about how much money mash-up artists like Girl Talk and Supermash Bros would actually have to pay for their songs, i think they shouldnt have to pay anything as they make new creations with the songs and dont just straight copy the whole song and ideas of the song. I'm Looking forward to what the future of the class has in store!

A04

For this assignment i went half and half on things outside vs inside, many of the things that were outside i found on my daily commute to campus and the things inside i recognized while just hanging around the house. i really liked this exercise as it made me more observant when doing mindless tasks such as driving home, almost giving me a new goal while doing things i normally do.

For this assignment i found the following letters: A,C,D,I,J,M,O,P,S,T,U, and V

also i will try to make an incredibly cheesy pun/joke/use the letter as much as possible for each picture... because i can.....

A
A(pun......) mailbox!

C
I hope those Corks dont Catch fire
D
This Door has got a pretty Dashing locky Do-hicky thing on it

P

S
I found this one as i Swerved down a Steep and Scary Side Street
T
This patio was made from These bricks by peoples sweat and Tears (not really Tears)

U
Underneath the surface level appearance, the Upkeep at this old folks housing Unit is Unacceptable (its actually really good)
V

My team for the scavenger hunt was the Jacks: KylieAudraPayton.  we busted out of the gates running (not literally) and headed over towards knowlton because we could knock out 2 of the needed chair requirements there, but we failed to realize in time that we straight up blew by the Wexner center for arts and the Thompson library. we figured out we needed them so we had to trek all the way back, stopping at the science and engineering library on the way to take that out. To figure out the answers to the clues we called upon the information we learned during our field trip to the Wexner and knowlton libraries and what we couldnt remember from that we got from using Kylie's phone.

CLUE 01)
Here Kylie is snoozing on the Barcelona chair which was designed by  Miles van der Rhoe, the chair itself looks super classy and is very comfortable. We found this chair in the Knowlton school of Architecture's library.

CLUE 02)
Also in the Knowlton library we knocked out clue number 2 by finding another interesting (not Barcelona) chair. We chose to use the Pastil chair which was designed by Eero Aarnio and is made out of fiberglass making it fairly weather resistant and able to float. in the picture Audra is taking a gander at the Harvard Design Magazine.

CLUE 03)
This picture was taken at the cool stair looking structure outside the Wexner Center for the Arts, which has the castle-esque look to it in honor of the armory that once was there before it was built. The building was designed by Peter Eisenman. Audra and Kylie are high-fiving as this was our last stop on our hunt.

CLUE 04)
On our way to Knowlton we stopped at the Science and Engineering Library (commonly known as the SEL). we stopped because it met the criteria for clue 4, which was to find something that was designed by Philip Johnson. there are lots of arches on the exterior of the building and the use of larger arches indicates to the public where they should walk through.

CLUE 05)
The building in the background is Thompson Library, Ohio States 109 million dollar library located at the west end of the oval. Thompson was designed by Acock and Associates. this picture shows off my great height by showing me touching the top of the building.
